Factory of the present: Successfully navigating digital transformation

Digitalization is more about leadership than technology

As digital technologies, automation, and artificial intelligence continue to advance, companies face growing pressure to translate technological potential into measurable business results. But what is the most effective path through this transformation?

Taking a realistic approach to digital transformation

The pace of digital transformation is accelerating across nearly all industries. Many companies invest in new technologies before the necessary processes, structures, and responsibilities are fully in place. As a result, transformation quickly becomes an organizational challenge.

A common mistake is to consider technology as the decisive factor, when in fact, it is the ability to focus on the right priorities that allows companies to grow. Leaders must navigate the course between a long-term vision and the demands of daily operations.

Factory of the present: The reality of industrial transformation

Many companies already work with digital solutions, although their levels of digital maturity vary considerably. Fully autonomous factories remain a long-term ambition for most organizations. The real task, therefore, lies in advancing the “Factory of the Present” by focusing on technologies that deliver measurable value today.

Whether through greater process efficiency, increased transparency, or better decision-making, the focus must remain on tangible business value. Digital twins are a particularly compelling example. By creating virtual representations of machines and processes, companies can simulate operations, conduct testing, and identify risks at an early stage. As a result, they accelerate commissioning, reduce opportunity for error, and improve asset performance throughout the entire lifecycle.

Artificial Intelligence as a tool

The same principle applies to Artificial Intelligence. AI creates value where it makes knowledge more accessible, improves decision-making, and reduces manual effort.

This also changes the role of employees. Rather than performing routine activities, they increasingly manage, evaluate, and improve intelligent systems. Successful manufacturing environments therefore depend on the combination of technology, stable processes, and a skilled workforce.

Shaping the future in the factory of the present

The key success factors of digital transformation were at the center of the executive panel “Winning Results in the Factory of the Present” at Rethink – The Manufacturing Leadership Council in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The discussion together with leaders from Eli Lilly and Rockwell Automation made one thing clear: The greatest opportunities do not lie in abstract visions of the future, but in the targeted improvement of existing structures and processes. Long-term competitiveness is not driven by technology enthusiasm alone, but by choosing the right pace, taking a realistic view of organizational maturity, and consistently scaling what delivers proven value.
